Tab-slot joints: 0.2 mm offset
For a secure tab-slot joint, give the tab a 0.2 mm offset from the slot. You can then slide the parts together with light pressure, and they'll hold without glue.

This through-coloured wood fibreboard is affordable, strong, and often requires no finishing.

Properties
Colored MDF is a homogeneous material with relatively high hardness and rigidity. Compared to normal MDF, it is a lot heavier and slightly stronger. The surface is smooth and equal on both sides. It is not waterproof but does not discolor and remains relatively strong when wet.
Applications
Both technically and aesthetically favorable properties make it useful for many applications. Some examples include engineering prototypes, enclosures and other constructions, and signing.

For a secure tab-slot joint, give the tab a 0.2 mm offset from the slot. You can then slide the parts together with light pressure, and they'll hold without glue.
For clean, secure-fitting finger joints, give the connecting parts a 0.1 mm offset. When assembling, align the front of one part with the back of the other; this ensures the joints fit flush.
You can add holes up to 1 mm in diameter to mounting and cover plates. Black MDF remains sturdy, even with many small holes close together.
The laser removes a narrow strip of material. For fine details, many small parts, and interlocking parts, compensate for this kerf in your design. The value per thickness is listed in the specifications.
Both line and fill engravings are visible on black MDF, appearing as a slightly darker shade on the black. Line engravings are the sharpest. Fill engravings, especially large areas, appear slightly darker than the surface.
Black MDF is ideal for cut-out logos and large letters. Choose a stencil font so that the inner parts of letters like o, a, and e remain attached.

Yes, black MDF is coloured throughout. The cut edge is also black, even a slightly deeper black than the surface, so you don't need to paint the edges.
Slightly: there is some soot on the laser-cut edge. Wipe it with a damp cloth, and the edges will be clean.
Hardly. The residue is dark in colour and is much less noticeable on black MDF than on regular MDF. If you want to prevent it entirely, choose protective film when ordering.
Black MDF is not waterproof, but it does not discolour and remains relatively strong when wet. It is not suitable for outdoor use; choose acrylic instead.
Choose it if the result needs to look good without any finishing: its surface is smooth and uniform on both sides, and the edges are also black. Black MDF is heavier and slightly stronger. For form studies, templates, and technical mock-ups, standard MDF is sufficient.
No. MDF is very flat and stays that way even with changing temperature and humidity, unlike solid wood and plywood.
