A low-cost plastic known for its use in drinking cups and food packaging.

Polystyrene is soft and flexible and can be thermoformed. To a certain extent it can also be cold-formed; it is possible to make folded products with thin sheets of the material.

Typical applications: Polystyrene is often used in models and prototypes due to the low cost of the material. Other examples include lampshades, templates and advertising products.

Design: During the design process, make sure that the details are not made too small, as they are likely to melt away or close up as a result of laser cutting. Keep a distance of at least 2 mm between the cutting lines. Acrylic is more suitable for detailed work.

Appearance: Laser cutting results in a small raised edge along the cut on the surface and underside. It may be possible to remove this with a knife or by sanding. Laser-cutting does not discolour the material.
Polystyrene is not well suited to surface engraving. Line engraving is possible but may result in a raised melted edge. Discolouration does not occur and the contrast of the engraved line is low as a result. It is advised that engravings intended purely for indicative purposes are not made too small.
